THE INQUIRY PROCESS

THE INQUIRY NATURE OF SON ADDRESSES CRITICAL BENCHMARKS AND NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS:

Benchmarks-Project 2061:

K-2

Raise questions about the world around them and be willing to seek answers to some of them by making careful observations and trying things out. Describing things as accurately as possible is important in science because it enables people to compare their observations with those of others.

3-5

Scientists' explanations about what happens in the world come partly from what happens in the world come partly from what they observe, partly from what they think. Graphical display of numbers may make it possible to spot patterns that are not otherwise obvious, such as comparative size and trends.

6-8

Thinking about things as systems means looking for how every part relates to others. The output from one part of a system (which can include material, energy, or information) can become the input to other parts. Such feedback can serve to control what goes on in the system as a whole.

9-12

Scientists assume that the universe is a vast single system in which the basic rules are the same everywhere. The rules may range from very simple to extremely complex, but scientists operate on the belief the rules can be discovered by careful and systematic study.

National Educational Technology Standards:

K-5

Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.

6-8

Develop an understanding of the relationships among technologies and the connections between technology and other fields of study.

9-12

Technology problem solving and decision making tools. Technology as a research tool.
