Many of you in the Student Observation Network may never see an aurora because you are too far south or live in cities with heavy light pollution. Even students who regularly see auroras cannot know the full extent of the auroral display. For example, if you see an aurora in Anchorage , Alaska , you might wonder if students in Minnesota or even Maryland saw it, too.
CANOPUS provides a map of the aurora in near real-time. Other observatories have all-sky cameras that record the auroral activity overhead at that observatory location.
