SUNSPOTTERS

  2. SOHO MDI with Numbers

A complete list of real-time data links is located in the Space Weather Resources section.

The MDI (Michelson Doppler Imager) produces images that appear most nearly like the Sun would look at sunrise or sunset. Remember, don't ever look directly at the Sun. The most prominent features are the sunspots.

Image of SOHO MDI data.

This image is from May 27, 2003 and shows several sunspots. The largest region is a cluster of several spots. This large sunspot region produced two large flares and coronal mass ejections late on the 27th and early on May 28. Each sunspot region is given a number by scientists to help them communicate with each other better.

SOHO MDI Numbers show black and white SOHO MDI images with sunspot numbers printed next to the sunspots. You should use these numbers when you refer to sunspots in your reports and when you submit your Sunspot Suspect to S.O.N.
